The beginning of November brought some changes to the NEMOS Team: We are pleased to welcome two new colleagues, Oliver Epsom and Clara Hüsken. Oliver has considerable experience of offshore engineering, marine and naval operations and the design of wave and wind energy devices. Clara joins our team after finishing her master studies in ocean engineering. She already demonstrated her skills working for NEMOS as a student trainee. We are excited to have the two colleagues contributing to the NEMOS development and are very much looking forward to a successful collaboration. On the other hand, a long-term employee Julius Schay left the company. We thank Julius for the great collaboration and wish him all the best for his personal and professional life.

The Technical Due Diligence process that was launched to accompany the project until commissioning successfully reached its first goal. The thorough analysis by independent third-party experts proved that the designed components are in conformity with the basis of the applicable standards. The NEMOS engineering team now proceeds with the manufacturing-relaunch of the research structures’ components and the detailed installation planning in close cooperation with local Belgian manufacturers and installation providers.
The independent review not only proves that the design complies with all specifications. The NEMOS engineering team especially was able to proof its capabilities regarding offshore engineering. The provided design documents resulted in no major queries by the auditing organisation. Load assessments and subsequent calculations as well as the software used were considered as state of the art in the design process of offshore structures. Regarding this, the NEMOS team is happy to notify that the knowledge gained within years of offshore wave energy converter development meets the industry standard.
After intense weeks of development and manufacturing, the NEMOS team successfully tested the first scaled model of the next generation wave energy converter (WEC) under realistic environmental conditions. This model features a 1:3 scale relating to the planned NEMOS Ostend WEC. After initial tank tests at the DST Duisburg the model was deployed at the NEMOS nearshore test site at Nissum Bredning in August.
This next generation WEC features advanced solutions, especially for the integration of the power take-off (PTO) components. Here, several approaches were successfully developed and tested. These developments are showing that the new concept works without the tower infrastructure that was required for the previous design. Based on the knowledge gained out of the test campaigns in the tank in Duisburg as well as the nearshore tests in Denmark, the concept is now finalized for deployment in Ostend in larger scale.
The NEMOS team is especially proud that the test campaign in Denmark worked out as a smooth out of the box run. Returning from the trip, the test crew reported that the setup functioned as planned in a plug-and-play manner. Without incidents, the required tests were performed with high efficiency within a few days.
As recent feasibility studies of the next generation NEMOS Wave Energy Converter were successful, we would like to enlarge our team and are searching for an experienced Mechatronics Technician as well as for Student Assistants who are familiar with topics like engineering design, mechanics or electronics and come with a hands-on-mentality.
You will become part of an ambitious team with the opportunity to work on multiple high-tech topics in the fields of offshore-engineering, wave energy and the development of high performance components. We offer you the chance to show and extend your abilities, not only on the drawing board but also in the field by setting up and running test benches and experiments.

Moving forward in the development path, NEMOS is preparing the installation of the Ostend Research Tower that will provide the required infrastructure for the next generation NEMOS Wave Energy Converter prototype that is currently being developed. With the Belgian Development Agency POM West-Vlaanderen (http://pomwvl.be/) NEMOS found a cooperation partner who is planning to provide this research infrastructure for further ocean energy and marine research activities for years to come. To build this sustainable solution on a solid foundation, a technical due diligence process was launched that will accompany the project until commissioning.
Carnegie Clean Energy and NEMOS are collaborating in the field of wave energy technology. The joint work with the Australian company began with tank testing campaigns in 2014 and 2016, during which NEMOS provided the model scale power take-off for the Carnegie wave energy converter (WEC).
The collaboration became more intense in 2018 within the development of Carnegie’s new multi-moored wave energy converter CETO 6M. In addition to supporting the tank testing campaign at the University of Plymouth (GB), NEMOS was selected as one of the contributors in the development of a rotary power take-off system (PTO) for the “Albany Wave Energy Project”. Currently, NEMOS is working on design and manufacturing solutions for the mechanical power transmission system of the 25 m diameter full scale WEC.

In cooperation with LIROS®, our partner for rope solutions, we have been performing cyclic bend over shave tests (CBOS) with fibre ropes at the Institut für Fördertechnik und Logistik (IFT) in Stuttgart for several years now. With a new developed rope construction, we achieved 2.5 times longer lifetime compared to the previously tested standard rope.
The image shows a blue 12-strand hollow braided Dyneema® rope after about 1.3 million bendings. The yellow rope is the new developed 5-strand flat braided Dyneema® rope after the same number of cycles. On the pictures it is clearly visible that the blue rope shows higher wear and tear compared to the improved yellow one. The numbers emphasise the significant increase in lifetime: the blue rope failed after 1.3 million cycles while the yellow rope is still being tested and has already reached 3.2 million bendings to this day.
On 3rd of February NEMOS will demonstrate its impressive PTO test bench within "ON TOUR - Zwischen Rhein und Ruhr". This series of events is initiated and accompanied by Duisburg`s mayor Sören Link and will this time focus on education and future technologies. As a leading technology developer in the field of wave energy, NEMOS got invited to join the Horizon 2020 funded project „Space@Sea“. The consortium consisting of 17 European partners aims to provide sustainable and affordable workspace at sea by developing a standardised and cost efficient modular island with low ecological impact. In this context, NEMOS will contribute by developing technology for using wave energy from the relative motion between the separate modules. Here, enormous forces at relatively small amplitudes require a special designed PTO. NEMOS is looking forward to a fruitful interexchange of know-how within a broad international consortium.
